TOP TEN JEWELS SOLD AT AUCTION IN 2015

Jewelry auctions in 2015 offered a tantalizing array of the exceedingly rare and one-of-a-kind, from large precious gemstones fetching prices in the multi-millions to highly covetable jewels of unmatched design. The most precious of gems – pink diamonds, pigeon’s blood rubies and large diamonds of sheer perfection – battled it out for the most expensive jewel sold at auction. The winner, however, was none of those; it was an even rarer sort of stone. The Blue Moon diamond, a 12.03-carat Fancy Vivid Blue diamond, shattered the competition – and records – in November at Sotheby’s Geneva, selling for $48.5 million and setting world record prices for a diamond, gemstone or jewel.

Without further ado, here are the top ten jewels sold at auction in 2015:

10. A 5.18-carat Fancy Vivid Pink Diamond – $10,843,413

Set with a fancy vivid pink rectangular-cut diamond, weighing approximately 5.18 carats, within an oval-shaped diamond surround, mounted in gold, ring size 6 Accompanied by report no. 2165887854 dated 7 January 2015 from the GIA Gemological Institute of America stating that the 5.18 carat diamond is Fancy Vivid Pink color, VS2 clarity

9. A 9.07-carat Fancy Intense Pink Diamond – $12,634,508

Christie’s Hong Kong, June 2015

Set with a rectangular-shaped fancy intense pink diamond weighing approximately 9.07 carats, flanked by triangular-shaped diamonds, mounted in platinum and 18k rose gold, ring size 5¼. Mounted by Harry Winston Accompanied by report no. 12290465 dated 3 December 2014 from the Gemological Institute of America stating that the 9.07 carat diamond is fancy intense pink, natural colour, internally flawless clarity Also accompanied by a supplemental letter from the Gemological Institute of America stating the 9.07 carat diamond has been determined to be type IIa.

Designed as an articulated brilliant-cut diamond lattice-work band, centering on a line of graduated pear-shaped diamonds, thirteen pear-shaped diamonds weighing approximately 5.14 to 1.00 carats, framed by two rows of oval and cushion-shaped rubies weighing approximately 7.02 to 1.10 carats, to the brilliant-cut diamond link backchain accented with a pear-shaped diamond, mounted in 18k white gold, 43.9 cm long. 7. A 8.24-carat Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink Diamond – $13,866,553

Sotheby’s Geneva, November 2015

Set with a pear-shaped fancy vivid purple-pink diamond of exceptional color weighing 8.24 carats, between pear-shaped diamond shoulders, size 52. Accompanied by GIA report no. 1172236883, stating that the diamond is Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink, Natural Color, SI1 Clarity, Excellent Polish, together with a Type IIa classification letter.

6. “The Historic Pink” – A 8.72-carat Fancy Vivid Pink Diamond – $15,903,422 Sotheby’s Geneva, May 2015

Set with a cushion brilliant-cut fancy vivid pink diamond weighing 8.72 carats, between cushion brilliant-cut diamonds weighing 1.09 and 1.12 carats, size 52. Accompanied by GIA report no. 2145476525, stating that the central diamond is Fancy Vivid Pink, Natural Color, VS2 Clarity, together with a Type IIa classification letter; and GIA report no. 2158045585 and no. 1156317506, stating that the two side diamonds are D Color, VVS1 and VVS2 Clarity.

5. “The Crimson Flame” – A 15.04-carat Burmese “Pigeon’s Blood” Ruby – $18,382,385 Christie’s Hong Kong, December 2015

Set with a cushion-shaped ruby, weighing approximately 15.04 carats, within a cushion-shaped diamond surround, to the pavé-set circular-cut diamond three quarter-hoop, mounted in gold, ring size 5½ Accompanied by premium report no. 80282 dated 12 February 2013 from the SSEF Swiss Gemological Institute stating that the ruby is of Burma (Myanmar) origin, with no indications of heating and the color of this ruby may also be called ‘pigeon blood red’ in the trade; also accompanied by an appendix stating that the ruby possesses extraordinary characteristics and merits special mention and appreciation.

4. A 100.02-carat Emerald-Cut Diamond – $22,090,000 Sotheby’s New York, April 2015

The largest perfect diamond with a classic Emerald-cut ever sold at auction; the first 100+ carat perfect diamond sold at auction in New York; and the highest price for any colorless diamond auctioned in New York.

The emerald-cut diamond weighing 100.20 carats, mounted in platinum, size 6½. Accompanied by GIA report no. 5161435897 stating that the diamond is D color, Internally Flawless. Together with a letter from the GIA stating that the diamond has been determined to be Type llA.

3. “The Sweet Josephine” – A 16.08-carat Fancy Vivid Pink Diamond – $28,523,925 Christie’s Geneva, November 2015

Accompanied by SSEF report no. 78414 and Gübelin report no. 15020105, each stating that the ruby is of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating, ‘pigeon blood color’, together with appendix letters; together with gemological reports for the diamonds.
